What is MIRTDC

Its establishment/existence

The Malawi Industrial Research and Technology Development Centre (MIRTDC) was established as a parastatal organization on 13th November, 1991 when the first Head of State President Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda signed its Trust Deed. Upon signing, the State President appointed the "Original Trustees" who included the Secretary for Industry and Trade, the Secretary for Research and Environmental Affairs, the Secretary for the Treasury, the Research Coordinator of the University of Malawi, the Director General of the Malawi Bureau of Standards and the Chairman of the Malawi Confederation Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Then MIRTDC started its operations in 1993 after office premises and funding were made available

Reporting structure to Government

The MIRTDC was structured to report directly to the Ministry of Industry and Trade as its line ministry and also the Ministry of Statutory Corporations as a parastatal.

What do we do

Conducting Industrial Research and Technology Development

The Malawi Industrial Research and Technology Development Centre(MIRTDC) performs the national mandate of conducting research and technology development in response to the socio-economic needs of the Malawi nation, especially for the development of the micro, small and medium enterprises sector and for the improvement of the standard of living of the people of Malawi.

Conducting Technology Transfer Activities

Conducting technology needs assessments, technology identification and training in production, operation and maintenance of technology.

Providing Consultancy Services

Providing consultancy services on the field of techno-economic analyses, baseline studies and project evaluation.

Funding sources for programmes and operations

The major source of funding for MIRTDC is the Government of Malawi. It also generate income from other sources such as development partners, business sector, non governmental organizations, regional organizations and other Government Departments.

Who are our clients and markets

The clients and markets of MIRTDC products and services are Government of Malawi, the business sector, non governmental organizations, entrepreneurs from the general public, regional development agencies and the people of Malawi in the national livelihood system.

Major achievements

The major achievements of the MIRTDC have been in the development and transfer of appropriate technologies for rural livelihood support, agricultural productivity improvement, industrial research and economic empowerment through micro and small enterprise development. 

Our strategic plan

The MIRTDC has a well developed strategic plan (pdf) for the period 2007-2012 which guides its operations and implementation plans. The strategic plan responds to the science and technology needs of the nation as expressed in the government policies and of those of its clients and market.
